Balance

Accucare Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, 732-785-5500, Brick, New Jersey   Falls are a threat to the health, independence, and lives of individuals ages 65 and over, and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in this population. More than one third of individuals ages 65 and over fall. Every 18 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall-related injury, and every 35 minutes, one of these individual dies as a result of injuries sustained from a fall. This amounts to 1.8 billion older adults treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to a fall, and the death of 15,800 older adults. Falls are not an inevitable part of aging, and there are proven strategies that can prevent falls and help older adults live longer and better lives.

At AccuCare Physical Therapy, we have designed a comprehensive fall prevention program to address the needs of the senior community in regards to fall risk and prevention. Our program includes education on safety and home modifications to create a hazard-free environment, information regarding questions to ask physicians regarding medications, and finally, a physical component to assess and address areas of weakness that would increase the risk for falling. The therapists at AccuCare are certified senior strength trainers (CSSTs) as well as PTs and PTAs and are acutely aware of the implications involved with training the senior population.

The initial session, where fall risk is assessed and the older adult is provided with the fall prevention packet is provided at NO COST to the patient. The program consists of 12 visits, spread over a course of 6 weeks. The initial visit consists of assessment of physical status and education regarding home and community safety. Visits 2-11 consist of an individualized exercise program, targeting the patient’s specific needs regarding balance, proprioception, strength, and ROM. The final visit consists of re-evaluation, re-assessment, and final education regarding all factors and components of fall prevention and safety. If needed, the patient may continue with the program for further strengthening and balance after the re-evaluation and re-assessment.

As a new addition to your facility, AccuCare has recently acquired the Biodex Balance System to assist in the testing and training of patients. It won the award for the Best Rehab Product of 2008 by the National Athletic Trainers Association and aides in testing and training a variety of conditions on a stable as well as variable surface. It provides visual biofeedback to assist in rehabilitation for diverse populations.
