Therapeutic Ultrasound is different from diagnostic ultrasound in that it doesn’t generate a picture. It is used for treating chronic pain and promoting tissue healing.
A therapist will apply a coupling agent, usually a gel, to the treatment area to increase contact between the therapy wand and the skin. Towels are used to protect clothing. Then the therapist will use an ultrasound wand with constant motion and light-to-moderate pressure to apply the modality. Most patients only feel the wand moving over their skin. There is rarely any discomfort. Treatments typically last 5-10 minutes.
There are certain instances when ultrasound should not be used such as: over an open wound, with women who are pregnant, near a pacemaker, or over growth plates in children and adolescents. Talk to your therapist for more information.
